Numbers can go below zero.

Step 1 — Understanding numbers less than 0

Yes, there can be numbers less than 0. We call these numbers negative numbers. They show something is below zero. We write a minus sign in front of them. For example, -1, -2, -3 are negative numbers. They are smaller than 0.

Step 2 — Ways to have less than 0 of something

Let us think about money. Imagine you have 0 rupees in your pocket. You buy a candy for 5 rupees. You borrow 5 rupees from your friend. Now you owe your friend 5 rupees. This means you have -5 rupees. You have less than 0 rupees.

Let us think about temperature. Water freezes at 0 degrees Celsius. In very cold places, it gets colder. The temperature can be -3 degrees Celsius. This is below freezing point. It is less than 0 degrees.

(i) Yes, there can be numbers less than 0. These are called negative numbers. They are shown with a minus sign. For example, -1, -2, -3, and so on. (ii) One way is debt. If you owe someone money, you have "less than 0" money. (iii) Another way is temperature. Temperatures can fall below 0 degrees Celsius.
