Solution

When we add, subtract, or multiply numbers, we can find the remainder of the result by first performing the operation on their individual remainders.

Step 1 — Remainder of the sum

Let N1N_1 be the first number. Let N2N_2 be the second number. We are given that N1N_1 leaves a remainder of 3 when divided by 7. We are given that N2N_2 leaves a remainder of 5 when divided by 7. We want to find the remainder of their sum, N1+N2N_1 + N_2, when divided by 7. We can add the remainders first.

N1+N2 will have the same remainder as 3+5 when divided by 7N_1 + N_2 \text{ will have the same remainder as } 3 + 5 \text{ when divided by } 7

3+5=83 + 5 = 8

Now, we find the remainder of 8 when divided by 7. 8÷7=1 with a remainder of 18 \div 7 = 1 \text{ with a remainder of } 1

Remainder of sum=1\boxed{\text{Remainder of sum} = \mathbf{1}}

Diagram 1

Step 2 — Remainder of the difference

We want to find the remainder of their difference, N1N2N_1 - N_2, when divided by 7. We can subtract the remainders first.

N1N2 will have the same remainder as 35 when divided by 7N_1 - N_2 \text{ will have the same remainder as } 3 - 5 \text{ when divided by } 7

35=23 - 5 = -2

A remainder must be zero or a positive number. To make 2-2 positive, we add 7 to it. 2+7=5-2 + 7 = 5

Remainder of difference=5\boxed{\text{Remainder of difference} = \mathbf{5}}

Step 3 — Remainder of the product

We want to find the remainder of their product, N1×N2N_1 \times N_2, when divided by 7. We can multiply the remainders first.

N1×N2 will have the same remainder as 3×5 when divided by 7N_1 \times N_2 \text{ will have the same remainder as } 3 \times 5 \text{ when divided by } 7

3×5=153 \times 5 = 15

Now, we find the remainder of 15 when divided by 7. 15÷7=2 with a remainder of 115 \div 7 = 2 \text{ with a remainder of } 1

Remainder of product=1\boxed{\text{Remainder of product} = \mathbf{1}}

Answer
