Question 7

Dwarakanath purchases notebooks at a wholesale price of ₹23.6 per piece and sells each notebook at ₹30/-. How much profit does he make if he sells 50 books in a week?

Check your answer with HomiSolve it yourself, then let Homi check your steps and spot mistakes.
Solution

We will first find the profit on one notebook. Then we will find the total profit for all notebooks.

Step 1 — Find profit per notebook

Dwarakanath buys each notebook at a certain price. This is the wholesale price. He sells each notebook at a higher price. This is the selling price. The profit on one notebook is the selling price. We subtract the wholesale price from it. Let the wholesale price be PWP_W. Let the selling price be PSP_S. Let the profit per notebook be PNP_N.

PW=23.6P_W = ₹23.6

PS=30P_S = ₹30

PN=PSPWP_N = P_S - P_W

PN=3023.6P_N = 30 - 23.6

PN=6.4P_N = 6.4

Profit per notebook=6.4\boxed{\text{Profit per notebook} = ₹\mathbf{6.4}}

Diagram 1

Step 2 — Calculate total profit

Dwarakanath sells many notebooks. We know the profit for one notebook. To find the total profit, we multiply. We multiply profit per notebook by notebooks sold. Let the number of notebooks sold be NN. Let the total profit be PTP_T.

N=50N = 50

PT=PN×NP_T = P_N \times N

PT=6.4×50P_T = 6.4 \times 50

PT=320P_T = 320

Total profit=320\boxed{\text{Total profit} = ₹\mathbf{320}}

Answer

(i) Profit per notebook = ₹6.4 (ii) Total profit = ₹320
