Solution

We will make a bar graph. It shows insect counts.

Step 1 — Set up the graph axes

We need to draw two lines on graph paper. Let us draw a horizontal line. This line is called the X-axis. We write insect names here. Let us draw a vertical line. This line is called the Y-axis. We write insect numbers here.

Step 2 — Choose a scale

We choose a scale. 1 unit length means 5 insects. This means 5 insects will be 1 unit tall. 10 insects will be 2 units tall. 15 insects will be 3 units tall. 20 insects will be 4 units tall. 25 insects will be 5 units tall.

Step 3 — Calculate bar heights

We have the number of each insect. We divide each number by 5. This gives the bar height.

For Butterflies: 15 insects÷5 insects/unit15 \text{ insects} \div 5 \text{ insects/unit}

3 units\boxed{3 \text{ units}}

For Honeybees: 25 insects÷5 insects/unit25 \text{ insects} \div 5 \text{ insects/unit}

5 units\boxed{5 \text{ units}}

For Spiders: 10 insects÷5 insects/unit10 \text{ insects} \div 5 \text{ insects/unit}

2 units\boxed{2 \text{ units}}

For Beetles: 5 insects÷5 insects/unit5 \text{ insects} \div 5 \text{ insects/unit}

1 unit\boxed{1 \text{ unit}}

For Caterpillars: 12 insects÷5 insects/unit12 \text{ insects} \div 5 \text{ insects/unit}

2.4 units\boxed{2.4 \text{ units}}

Step 4 — Draw the bars

Now we will draw the rectangular bars. Each bar must have the same width. There should be equal space between bars. The height of each bar is what we found. The Butterfly bar is 3 units high. The Honeybee bar is 5 units high. The Spider bar is 2 units high. The Beetle bar is 1 unit high. The Caterpillar bar is 2.4 units high.

Diagram 1

Answer

To draw the bar graph:

(i) Draw a horizontal axis (X-axis) representing the 'Insects and Critters' and a vertical axis (Y-axis) representing the 'Number of Insects'. (ii) Choose a scale, for example, 1 unit length = 5 insects. (iii) Draw rectangular bars of equal width for each category with heights corresponding to their values:

  • Butterfly: 15 (3 units high)
  • Honeybee: 25 (5 units high)
  • Spider: 10 (2 units high)
  • Beetle: 5 (1 unit high)
  • Caterpillar: 12 (2.4 units high)
